  • Yes, I actually killed her before talking to Aventus. I was that stupid. I didn't even know I had to do it; as ridiculous as it sounds I have a habit of poisoning annoying NPCs. Did I just ruin the Dark Brotherhood questline, and do I have to start it with a console command now?

    • I did that one time, and Aventus Aretino simply told me to do it, then I told him immediately that she was already dead. The questline continued as normal afterward, so there should be no affect.

    • This will go better than expected

    • Yup, I killed Grelod beforehand too. Aventus now seems to think I'm not only Dark Brotherhood, but also psychic, since I already knew who to kill.  :)

    • no no no don't worry about that since you already killed the target the questline will function normally

    • what do you do afterwards to contiue the questline?

go to bed and wait a few hours and you are taken to the abandoned shack near solitude and there you are made with two choices either kill astrid  and the dark brotherhood for 30000 gold or kill the captives and join the dark brotherhood

    • If you do this than delay starting you get the Jester out side of Whitsun asking to have his cart fixed cause the wheel is broken off, and assails sent after you with notes signed by Astrid

    • Nothing. All he says is your amazing since you did it before he asked.Keep in mind that I think that you SHOULDN'T kill before the contract.Other than that lady in Markarth. It justs goes on like normal I think, like you did it after she asks.(I think. That's what happened to me.)

    • You can’t have a companion and you have too sleep in your first house

    • How many Dark Brotherhood are there?

    • There are two situations like this. When the Dark Brotherhood sends you to Markarth to meet I think it's Muiri she asks you to kill a lover who robbed her and her family and went into hiding with his Bandit horde in a Dwarven ruin. It is possible to have visited this site for a different Quest and killed her lover before being sent there (or even before joining the Brotherhood. Thus when you speak with her you have the option to be like "Oh, him? I already killed that guy." Muiri will be shocked and sound a little sad about him being dead, but pays you for your "services" all the same.

Killing Grelod has the same effect. When you do speak to Aventus he marvels at how expertly the Dark Brotherhood managed to kill his target without ever asking him. Which, presumably would have been what the OLD Brotherhood would do with The Listener getting orders directly from the Night Mother. Since Astrid has abandoned the Night Mother, Daedra-worshipping aspect of assassin-ing, she has to rely on the more human approach of just showing up on the doorstep of anyone believed or known to have perfoed the Dark Sacrament.

Actually, No. The Dark Brotherhood Assassins that show up and have a note from Astrid telling them to "Kill <playername>. Someone wants that poor fool dead." Are not at all tied to the Questline. It's just a fun tidbit that you actually have a Contract on you (which also means that you're the possible 'person with a contract on them' in the Shack)

I started Dawnguard before i ever spoken to Aventus Arentino or killed Grelod the Kind. So i have yet to have interactions that would involve the Dark Brotherhood. As i was making my way to Serana's Home, i was attacked by a Dark Brotherhood Member who had the note on them. And i even already happened to be attacked by one when i left the Cave after the Escape from Helgen. This means you already have a Contract on you the moment you start the game, or rather even before you start the Game. It literally gives background about how the game starts.

Raluf will comment about how you tried to cross the border with Lokir saying something along the lines of "If they weren't looking for you Stormcloaks, i would have gotten away and would be halfway to Hammerfell."

This means the Border you were likely to cross was the one to Hammerfell. The Dragonborn possibly tried to escape to Hammerfell, but was captured alongside the Stormcloaks.

As a bit of Lore: Hammerfell is the province that crashed down on the Dark Brotherhood the hardest. When they were slowly rooted out, the Brotherhood of Hammerfell was destroyed first and they still keep close watch so that no new Brotherhood can form in Hammerfell. This makes Hammerfell the SAFEST place for a person who knows they have a Contract on them. So... Dragonborn tried to cross the border to Hammerfell and the Random Event of the Assassin can happen right after the Escape from Helgen. This are hints that you indeed tried to escape the Dark Brotherhood.
