  • When completing The Book of Love to gain the Blessing of Mara, who did you encourage to persue Fastred ?

Bassianus Axius, or Klimmek, and why?

    I feel so torn.

Fastred's father calls her a child, while Klimmek is an old man who's knees are giving out on him. How is that a good match?

Fastred says that Bassianus makes her happier than anyone else ever has (sorry Klimmek), but if you convince him to elope with her to Riften, the two of them loiter in the streets without work or a home to live in. Riften being what it is, does this mean that Fastred is forced to hock her arse off to pay for food?

So I'm curious, who did you go with and why? They're both Nords, so my racist Stormcloak can't even fall back on, "which one of them is a filthy foreigner that doesn't deserve her".

    😄

    • I go with Klimmek just because he seems nicer. I've only done this quest maybe twice though.

        Loading editor
    • I went with Bassianus Axius because that's who she was with at the time, and because I felt like having more people in Riften since I rarely go to Ivarstead; however, Klimmek is also a decent guy, so as I see it, it can go either way.

        Loading editor
    • Klimmek just seems a lot better of a choice, I think. The two can help repopulate tiny Ivarstead, and because of reasons stated above.

        Loading editor
    • I tried both before. Let's analyse the situation here :

      - Fastred is obviously immature, but I don't like what her father is doing. He's trying to keep her in Ivarstead not because he's worried but because "we need to repopulate Ivarstead"? People need to do mistakes to find their own path. Also her mother wants to help them elope and I find it a little sad if you can do otherwise.

      - Bassianus' main characteristic is to be unbearable. If you talk to him, he's rude and that's all. If you allow him to elope with Fastred he will wander in the market in Riften with or without her. Just wander. If you talk to him again, you will only hear about Ivarstead and what a pain in the ass you are for talking with him. So I wonder : what was his plan? Going to Riften then living in the streets? So much for improving their lives.

      - Klimmek is a nice guy, I don't care about his knees. He obviously have feelings for Fastred even If he can't say it properly because Nords men are supposed to be tough (lol). So she left him for that and jumped on the next shiny thing (If I can say that). The thing is, if you really lost all interest in someone you won't come back to him thanks to a little persuasion. Fastred seems eager to take him back when he voice his interest, meaning Bassianus was probably a flirt.

Overall I find it more satisfying to go for Klimmek. As for your Stormcloack playthrough, I'd say Klimmek too because he's a local man with a simple life and he don't want to be anything else. He does manual, physical labor. To me, that's more like the ideal Nordic. Sorry for the big message about something so simple.

    • No need to apologise Bilitis! I basically agree with everything you've fashioned out.

I've gone with Bassianus (emphasis on anus) before because I figured if he made Fastred happier than she's ever been, thenI was all for her making her own mistakes and living her life and not being controlled by her father and used for his purposes.

This time though, I decided for this play through to go with Klemmek, because when I spoke to Klemmek he was taking supplies to give the monks on the top of the mountain... For free. That might not make for good business sense, but it did mean that he was a good person. And I figure his fishing business must be going well if he can afford to feed a temple of monks out of pocket.

      😄

    • Wonderful, now I cannot unsee this thing with his name lol

I always forget the delivery thing. What a pain in the ass : wolves, Frost Trolls ... no wonder he's tired of it. By the way, what's Bassianus job in Ivarstead?

Grey Beards are respected, people do their pilgrimage so it's less "supplies" than "offerings". That's even more impressing from Klimmek because he basically help them to survive. Besides, I never steal anything from High Hrothgar.

Whatever result you pick for this quest is a little awkward since Klimmek and Bassianus are supposed to be friends and live together. You choose Bassianus? Bye Fastred, Bye friend. You choose Klimmek? Err ... are you still friends after the girl that broke up with your pal to date you broke up with you for your pal? Where will they live? Menage a trois? I know, devs don't think so far.

Also for your Stormcloack playthrough : can we really trust a Nordic with an Imperial name?

    • Fastred may be in love with Bassianus Axius, but like her father said... "Her fancies change vid teh moons".

Bassianus is block head for coming up with the idea of taking Fastred to a corrupt town like Riften. At least Klimmek intends to stay in their hometown of Ivarstead, and look's after the Greybeards supplies. Best place in Skyrim if you ask me, second only to Riverwood.

    • I just stumbled over this thread while doing the quest and decided to go for Klimmek. Out of curiosity I tried to pickpocket our dear Bassianus (you never know what Skyrim's people hide from you) and found KLIMMEK's house key in his pocket.

So, either he is a filthy thief or they are living together, meaning Klimmek was nice enough to take that bastard in. Or I just destroyed their beautiful relationship.

        Loading editor
    • No, they really are living together and they are friends. Klimmek even mention him in a conversation, he say something like "I don't understand women like Bassianus" but he seems completely oblivious that Fastred is now with his friend.

As for Bassianus (I answer my own question about his job because I just read it), appearantly he fishes with Klimmek, waiting for a better job opportunity.

    • The first time I played through this, I chose Klimmek. He's obvious the nicer man who considers you a good friend for helping him, and he still has feelings for Fastred. So it's a cute exchange where you tell him to man up and tell her how he feels, and then he asks her not to leave.

However, in my second playthrough, I chose Bassianus. Not for his benefit, but for Fastred's. She has wanderlust and wants to leave her boring hometown. And I kinda sympathize with that.

But Bassianus whisks her off to Riften of all places. She'll probably dump him for Brynjolf and become a naive pawn of the Thieves Guild, or find employment at Haelga's Bunkhouse.

    • The first time I did the mission (one of my many games) I chose Klimmek. Not because he looks like a good guy and hard worker. If not because although it may have been a matter of immature love. She was very much in love with Klimmek, according to her father, if that were the case, knowing that Klimmek had feelings too, it seemed better that she knew Klimmek's feelings in order to choose between her two suitors. When Klimmek is confessed to whom he chooses between the two is to him. She seemed to be more immaturely in love with the idea of leaving her village with too many "little birds" in her mind and living a "good life" outside her village with her "love" and seeing the world. I choose Klimmek because in this way she can choose between the two, and decides, which does not matter how immature it is, it requires a little of maturity to decide, it begins to grow. Bassianus does not really seem to be a bad person, perhaps lazy but not bad, look at his dialogues. Although unfortunately for him, in fact, who is most reciprocated is Klimmek. I used the google translator to write the most of this out quickly, if you find a mistake you know why.

    • B-ass-I-anus comes across as the prototypical bad boy that makes smart women do stupid things.  And although Fastred/Klimmek is certainly a May/December romance, it still comes across as sweet and honest.  I'm glad to help that along any day.

        Loading editor
    • Bassinanus is not even angry about it after the quest when you find him in Riften. Another proof he doesn't care (or that devs are lazy).

        Loading editor
    • Went to Bassianus, he asked me if "it is absolutely necessary to bother him right now" so I went to Klimmek.

        Loading editor
    • Klimmek maybe old, but Bassianus did not look young, either...Between too obivoiously older guys, Klimmek obviously is a better choice. Bassianus seems to be like the type would lure younger women and pimp them out in the street.Beside, Bassianus told me not to bother him  if "it is absolutely necessary to bother him "

        Loading editor
    • Every time I do the quest I choose Klimmek.  Just because he's outside, and it skips two loading screens.  He seems the better choice in any case.

    • Go with Bassinanus because she seems like the metal chick groupie type she deserves a lifetime of misery. Klimmek needs a higher quality female to raise a family and this way I remove Fastred from the gene pool since this way she will likely end up selling her body or robbing people in the sewers.

Wow, that's messed up. You want to scale it back a bit, Teenguy McEdgelord?

    • On my first playthrough I chose Bassianus because that's what she wanted. Riften was more populated and I liked that, but nothing really interesting comes off of that... Like they say, they just linger there homeless/jobless. After reading this thread I chose Klimmek this time and, wow! my eyes popped out when I convinced him to tell her how he feels, followed him to Fastred and he mans up... Booyah! I liked this even more when I came up to Fastred and the first thing she said was "it's a fine day with you around". See for yourself and see the conversation between Klimmek and Fastred, you'll like it ;) Even more so, I went to see Bassianus after and yes he's an arse. He probably just flirted with her at some point. He can go flirt with wh*res or whatever.

    • Klimmek. He's so much nicer.

        Loading editor
    • I choose Bassianus simply because I don't think Fastred deserves Klimmek.

I think Klimmek deserves better than a woman that changes her love like she changes clothes.

I agree with Bilitis. I'm almost positive that they're roommates.

    • Chances are Klimmek will never meet another woman unless he left Ivarstead. So depriving him of Fastred would probably be equivalent to consigning him to eternal loneliness.

        Loading editor
    • I agree that Klimmik is clearly the better person, and so if I were to consider only that, I'd definitely choose him every time; that being said, I rarely go to Ivarstead, so I chose to move Fastred and Bassianus Axius to Riften because I go there more often. In terms of gameplay, I choose Bassianus, but in an actual situation, I would go with Klimmik.

    • I don't usually practice necromancy on threads, but I just had to chip in on this one. Hasn't anyone noticed that after you get Klimmek and Fastred back together you can hear Klimmek coming on to Lynly in the Inn? It really took me by surprise the first time I heard it. "Why you sorry, two-timing piece of troll dung," I thought.

This of course only made the dilemma worse the next time around. Trust Bethesda to give you really impossible choices--or to point out that in RL it's never black and white.

Ultimately I decided that Klimmek was still the better choice. Bassianus would probably turn out to be a wife beater and he definitely wasn't interested in making a better life for himself and his family--what with roaming Riften taking odd jobs--or worse.

At least in Ivarsted Fastred would have her family close by if things fell apart and she divorced her unfaithful husband. She could learn from the experience and possibly fall for that very sweet, hard working wood elf.

By the way divorce doesn't exist in Skyrim. Also I've never heard that line you quote.

    • Of course they don't have divorce.  She could kill him though.  Anyway, I was speaking figuratively.  As to never hearing that line before--I did not quote the line which was spoken.  I don't know exactly what it was--he asked her to have a drink with him or something and she said no, she wasn't ready for that sort of thing yet.  I won't say why she wasn't ready because that would be a spoiler for a little mini-quest.  That part about troll-dung was MY thought.

Please spoil it for me. While having a drink isn't necessarily romantic, Lynly's alleged response is suspicious (the quest you're referring to, does this have to do with someone in Riften, by any chance)?

    • So, before the start of the Book of Love quest, this happens:

"Klimmek convinced himself he isn't good enough for Fastred. It would be no surprise to feel lonely in his shoes, and as such, he can sometimes be found trying (and struggling) to ask bard Lynly Star-Sung on a date when he's visiting the inn, only to be kindly rejected:

Klimmek: "I thought you played wonderfully last night." Lynly: "Thank you Klimmek. That's too kind." Klimmek: "Perhaps when you're finished here this evening, we could..." Lynly: "You're sweet. I'm just not ready for that sort of thing right now. I'm sorry." (copied from the UESP)

Anyway, the dialogue above happens automatically whenever Klimmek enters the inn, regardless of whether or not he's married to Fastred, as it is part of the world interactions. I'd still go with Klimmek though. Besides, whenever Bassianus opens his mouth, I hear Nazeem, lol.

    • "Bassianus' main characteristic is to be unbearable." I think thats becuase he was voiced by the same guy who voiced Nazem. Anyone with that tone of voice would be unbearable.

    • I help Bassianus simply because he was in the inn and willing to be helped.  Klimmek was in his house with the door locked.  After I picked the lock and entered, of course he was not very happy and threatened to call the guards.  Not his fault really, but I didn't have the patience to wait around heaven-knows-how long for him to become available-- probably overnight.  It's funny how even the people who say they love Ivarstead and want it to grow tell visitors to leave because there's nothing there for them.
