How do you destroy runes?

Is it possible to destroy runes without taking damage(Or atleast avoid as much damage as possible without using resistance against fire,frost or shock).So far I've cast Firebolt and (for some reason) Fury aswell as hitting it with the Blade of Woe without any sucess.
