Hearthfire Review: A Diversion Lacking Depth

Of all the add-ons that recently came to the PS3, the one for which I was most hyped was probably Hearthfire. This was probably because I'm the sort of fellow who really enjoys roleplaying in roleplaying games (isn't that an odd concept). I wanted to really explore my character and flesh him out. I wanted to give him and his wife a home that would suit his character. At first, I really enjoyed my options. It's pretty much what I asked for, so did I find any fault with it? Well, let's find out.

HD Texture Pack Update and Dragonborn now available on Steam

Bethesda has recently released an update to the HD Texture Pack for PC players. This update adds high resolution for the base game, as well as Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn.

For those who already have the HD Texture Pack, this update is approximately 4.7 GB. Bethesda warns that PC's should exceed the minimum system requirements for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim before installation. That includes:

  • Windows Vista/7
  • At least 4GB of system RAM
  • DirectX 9.0c compatible NVIDIA or AMD ATI video card with a minimum of 1GB RAM.

In other PC news, Dragonborn is now on Steam, priced at $19.99. PlayStation 3 owners can expect to see the add-on hit the PlayStation Store February, 12, at half the price for the first week.

Dragonborn DLC coming to PS3 and PC

Bethesda confirmed today that the latest add-on for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Dragonborn will be coming to PS3 and PC early some time in 2013. When a user asked if this meant Dawnguard and Hearthfire would be coming to the PS3 as well, Bethesda responded:

We know you guys are hungry for more content, and we still have more in the works. We’ll share details with everyone as soon as we can.

This certainly bodes well for PS3 players. For now however, we can at least be certain that PS3 and PC will be getting the new content some time next year.

The State of Skyrim's Economy

Bear with me and indulge me for a moment if you will, I'd like to complain about an important aspect in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: it's economy.

This may seem like a minor trifle, but one thing that bothers me about Skyrim (other than a few other things) is how easy it is to accumulate a large amount of wealth. I ran into similar problems with games such as Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto IV, and Fallout 3. Whereas some games run out of ways for me to make money, games such as these and Skyrim run out of things to spend my money on.

Getting rich and being king of the world is a big part of an open world RPG. However, the fun part of an RPG isn't being the best, it's about being better. An RPG is more about self-improvement than competition. T…
