Warning about language/tone

Can anyone explain how it is decided when to put the warnings about improper tone or colloquial language on an article? I've cleaned up a few articles, fixing POV problems and the like. If I think the problems are addressed, should I just go ahead and remove the warning myself, or is that something that the owners of this Wiki should do after they've reviewed what I did? —This unsigned comment is by Cubears (talkcontribs) . Please sign your posts with ~~~~!

Add the tone template to the top of the article and you should be good. Also, if you want to ask someone else something, we post the message to the other person's talk page, not your own ;) Kroq-gar78 (talk) 20:14, July 20, 2013 (UTC)

Yes, I saw the little "dispute" and the code, that's why I decided to have a look. :) When you edit in source mode this doesn't happen. I saw you asked about when to remove the tone template, when the article is written in third person and one has cleaned it up and removed double links and so on, then you can remove the template. Some feedback

I have been watching your edits, i tend to do this is editors i have not seen yet, and i have some feedback i want to provide.

You make good solid edits from what i have seen, but you break your edits to an article into smaller edits. For example, your doing for edits to A Night to Remember all within minutes of eatch other without other editors in-between them. While this is not a big deal, we try to put all our work into one, maybe two, edits. There are several reasons we try to prevent edits like this, but i see no reason to go into them as i doubt you are doing this for any harmful reasons.

If you could try to lower the amount of edits you do to a single articles, that would be great. Other then that, keep up the good work, the edits have been great.

Thanks, and happy editing.-Cheatcodechamp (talk) 07:01, August 10, 2013 (UTC)

I fully understand, i have written entire (large) articles in one sitting by myself, and the fear of it all being lost was a big deal for me. I know that for larger edits, it helps to split them up, and that to some this looks like padding.
I could tell by your edit sizes it wasn't padding, im just one of the busy-body editors that felt i had to state a "for the record" about the edits. I doubt it will be a problem though, like i said, they are good edits, and most users know that lager edits are split to prevent major loss'. As long as these 2-3 edit streaks are helping clean up articles, most users wont care.
If you ever have any questions or concerns, let me know, im on the wiki everyday, so i can respond pretty fast unless im out or asleep (sleep is where im headed now) Thanks again, and happy editing.-Cheatcodechamp (talk) 08:10, August 10, 2013 (UTC)

RE:Thoughts on second person

Ive been reading it since i got a notice of a change on your wall (because i left you a message, my email feels it should inform of this stuff, and im kinda a snoop)

I like what you are saying, i would recommend you put it on your profile or a blog. A talk page is for messages between you and other users.

A blog would allow a larger group of people to see your thoughts on this, and ive always been a fan of feedback.-Cheatcodechamp (talk) 05:49, August 13, 2013 (UTC)

Im here to help, keep up the good work, alot of us have gone slack, new users keep us on our toes :) Cheatcodechamp (talk) 03:46, August 14, 2013 (UTC)

Re: Thieves' Guild vs. Thieves Guild

I understand why you changed the disambig page, but I have also since renamed "Thieves' Guild (Skyrim)" back to "Thieves Guild (Skyrim)", as that is how it appears in-game. Were it to appear as "Thieves' Guild", the page name and the disambig entry would've both been fine. Thanks for asking before inciting an edit war ;) Kroq-gar78 (talk) 01:00, August 19, 2013 (UTC)

No problem. Happy editing :) Kroq-gar78 (talk) 01:05, August 19, 2013 (UTC)

RE:Journal Entries for Quest Articles

Hey Cubbears.

Yes, we do want those, While i dont think we officially voted on it, we did decided that we wanted to journal entries added. I see no reason anybody should interfere with you doing this. But just to keep with my paranoid side, you can tell anybody who questions you about this that i said its ok :)

As for the creating of the box, i dont think we have an easy to use template. What i do is take the box from one article, and replace the entries. You may be doing this already, but its the only thing i can think of. User:TombRaiser would know of the template if it exist.

Good work, and happy editing.-Cheatcodechamp (talk) 18:01, August 19, 2013 (UTC)

We don't have a template, but I mainly think this is because the use of a normal table/box allows for greater flexibility in some of the journals - not every one has exactly 1 objective per entry. Kroq-gar78 (talk) 18:10, August 19, 2013 (UTC)
Hi, I saw your message on the talk page - You can use Discerning_the_Transmundane#Journal as a good example of a journal page with a few different conditions in it. Jimeee (talk) 19:19, August 19, 2013 (UTC)

Looks like you got some help, only here can people snooping be a good thing :), Anyway, no, Bethesda should have no reason to be upset with us posting the logs, as we are giving them full credit, and we are a wiki, so we make no profit on this.-Cheatcodechamp (talk) 03:15, August 20, 2013 (UTC)

RE:Book link repair

No Problem :) I just see it randomly and i thought i have to correct it :D. It is of course very confused to see the difference between those articles/pages.

Sorry for the late answer i wrote on my one user talk, cause i do not often use user talks. The most wikis have actually not any more a talk page, they have a message wall :x Mike alias the Checker (talk) 05:21, September 15, 2013 (UTC)

Regarding Hag's End

That is exactly what i thought.I didn't added it because i didn't confirm it myself. If you find the information to have any truth to it, feel free to add it on another section. (Sky Above,Voice Within (talk) 00:29, September 17, 2013 (UTC))

Reporting vandalism

Hello, I saw you posted a message to EbonySkyrim's talk page about vandalism. Generally, such reports are posted to the TES:VIP page, where many admins can check it periodically. Thanks. Kroq-gar78 (talk) 20:15, September 27, 2013 (UTC)

Yes, that sort of trivia is completely irrelevant and speculation - so things like this are okay to remove on sight. Personally I never liked "Trivia" as a heading because it promotes this sort of thing. We used to use the header "Notes" but that was scrapped because apparently it was not descriptive enough. Jimeee (talk) 08:50, October 7, 2013 (UTC)

Please only put the Bugs template on articles with a high amount of bugs mentioned relating to them.

Thank you. —AutoBlood Talk 02:37, October 20, 2013 (UTC)

From what I've seen as regular use, short sections of bugs should not be hidden or have the template. Might be time to make another Consensus Track then. —AutoBlood Talk 15:15, October 20, 2013 (UTC)
I will create a Consensus track post on the forum or at the very least, ask the admins about it when I get the chance. —AutoBlood Talk 19:30, October 20, 2013 (UTC)
I created the thread on the Consensus Track which can be found here. —AutoBlood Talk 21:53, October 27, 2013 (UTC)

Re: Pieces of the Past

 1. If the journal does not change its text for different objectives, then there is no need to create a whole new row just to write an objective. It's pointless. I've done it across several other articles to clean them up with no objections raised.
 2. Please direct me to the specific policy which states that. Before you edited it out, nobody else had objections with it there.

If you feel it should be removed, use the talkpage to discuss whether it should stay or not, instead of blindly removing. --Speysider Talk Page | Tabber Code | Channel 19:57, October 20, 2013 (UTC)

Feel free to remove it, but I feel it's not speculation as it isn't stating something that isn't true, more like giving a reason as to why it is the case, especially in the case of a bug. --Speysider Talk Page | Tabber Code | Channel 20:08, October 20, 2013 (UTC)

Re Speculation

Hi, I have read through all of the policy and style articles.. I couldnt find any specific mention of speculation, only that one should not add something unless one is certain.. I have seen Jimeee say that speculation does not belong here and I also agree to it. Oh and btw, gallery and trivia goes under journal and I'm moving it on Pieces of the past :) —EbonySkyrim Message! 22:26, October 20, 2013 (UTC)

Pieces of the Past

The way the bulletpoints in journals should go is as follows:

 • If you get multiple objectives at one point in a quest, then they all go under each other as they were issued at the same time. Such as "Harvest High Elf blood etc".
 • Sometimes the quest journal description will not update when completing an objective. A new objective is given but the journal reads the same. If this happens, then a new row is created as the new objective cannot be considered part of the previous objective. See Prophet (Dawnguard).
 • In the case of your quest. If I recall, the "Retrieve" objectives are all given at once - and the "Bring" ones added as you get them. This is a little different, so I have slightly changed the format with indents to make it a little more distinct.

When to use capitals

Greetings and salutations

First, any improvements to our edits are always welcome, you have our thanks.

As for when to use capitals, the general rule is that only proper nouns are capitalized. Words like soul gem and arcane enchanter are just like slaughterfish or ebony bow; not proper nouns. Just because the item only appears in Elder Scrolls games doesn't change that. (Things like ebony bows and slaughterfish don't exist in real life, or other games that we know of, but that doesn't make their names proper nouns.)

We reworded the sentence about backtracking as the way it was phrased is implied gameplay advice.

In general, when we see two ways to word something, we usually choose the shorter one, unless it would make the page too repetitious. Also, we use in, not within, etc. We save the flowery verbiage for if we ever edit a Romance Novel Wiki. ;-) DarthOrc (talk) 05:20, October 27, 2013 (UTC)

Re Bugstemplate

Hi Cubears. I removed it becuase there isn't a long list of bugs there, but I forgot to remove the hideoption. I have now removed it and I have added the template again. And because I have had some personal matters I haven't seen the thread in the forum. I'm not very active there. I have now read the thread... —EbonySkyrim Message! 08:48, November 11, 2013 (UTC)

Freeing workers from stones in Solstheim

Greetings: We have made a couple of corrections: The quest The Fate of the Skaal does not have to be completed to free workers from stones, just using the shout Bend Will, even one word, will do the trick. DarthOrc (talk) 05:41, December 7, 2013 (UTC)

Our point is that the inhabitants of the Skaal Village can be set free without doing the quest, and the character's pages should reflect that.

It dosen't affect the quests if the workers are all freed from the stones. We usually free the people at Raven Rock right away so they will be at their places of business when we want them, the other stones we "liberate" as soon as we get to them. Storn will know and will make a remark to that effect, so yes, the quest completes.DarthOrc (talk) 08:33, December 7, 2013 (UTC)

Dragonborn Characters

Please stop adding Category:Skyrim: Characters to characters in Dragonborn. They belong only in Category:Dragonborn: Characters. Balagog gro-Nolob (The Gourmet is listening) 06:01, December 7, 2013 (UTC)

The reason there aren't Dragonborn equivalents of "Skyrim: Essential Characters" and the like is they would be very small categories, so it is more useful to just have them in the Skyrim category. Everything should be categorized as specifically as possible (without having near empty categories) and having Dragonborn characters in the Skyrim category isn't as specific as it could be, so less easy to use.
Dawnguard characters don't show up in the Skyrim Characters category, and I haven't seen the "DG" or "DB" on any category, you have probably seen this on something like Armor (Skyrim).

Re:Aventus Aretino

Blatant conjecture should be omitted, always. Statements with possible veracity should be flagged with the cite template or sourced by an in-game book or article at The Imperial Library, where "qualified" scholars can theorize reliably. In regards to this article, as loquacious and thoughtful as this edit was, it does not match our style of reporting only on established fact and not analysis. Adaptation of the game's character interactions is original research, and to reiterate, should be removed on site. Warning the offending editor is the best course of action from here. I shall handle it. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Questions? My Popsicle stand is open. ;) --—Deyvid Petteys (bother \ stalk) 04:46, December 9, 2013 (UTC)

Greetings & salutations (yes, we know we aren't supposed to use ampersands, but this isn't a regular page ;-p).

This may help: For links with a single word, small letters work the same as capitals - stahlrim works the same as Stahlrim. However, pages with more than one word Snowy Sabre Cat don't work. Also, for pages with a bracket, slaughterfish (Oblivion) works the same as slaughterfish Any letters or numbers typed immediately after a link - glass swords will be incorporated into the link, but apostrophies followed by a letter/digit won't, so lydia's sword has to be entered Lydia's sword.

We know it isn't everything you wanted, but it helps us.DarthOrc (talk) 06:39, December 23, 2013 (UTC)

We don't know how long the links have been this way. Wenny0119 told us about it on July 1, 2013.DarthOrc (talk) 08:39, December 24, 2013 (UTC)

I meant that the misc quests objectives that appear in the quest log can't really be considered quest names, as often they are entire sentences - for example "Take Torygg's War Horn to the Shrine of Talos for Elisif the Fair" appears in the quest log as a misc quest. In these cases it's acceptable to shorten it to something more appropriate like Elisif's Tribute. Jimeee (talk) 10:09, December 24, 2013 (UTC)

Noteworthy naming

Hello, i've noticed you've removed Nelthro's edit on Jorleif's name, so i mean to ask you if you could lay down yor thoughts on the matter here, as the style guidelines do not specify anything related to this. Thanks. —Sky Above,Voice Within · Show thy Voice! 02:52, December 25, 2013 (UTC)

Hitting the Books

Sorry for taking so long to respond. I have been quite busy what with the holidays. As far as my tone-revisions go, second-person indirect is actually the preferred writing style for quest articles. Using words such as "The Hero of Kvatch", "The Dragonborn", or "the player" is excusable, but we prefer writing with the subject implied. Take a look at our tone policy or the quest style sheet for details. I will add your recommended revision for the lead to the article. In the future, add your recommended revision to the article's talk page, where it can be discussed with other users. --—Deyvid Petteys (bother \ stalk) 21:04, December 26, 2013 (UTC)

Right Eye of the Falmer

Hi there, i saw you asking Wolf link why did he removed the Right Eye from the Thieves Guild article, and i have to say i agree with him. The respective section on the article describes the trophies earned after the quests, and only the Left Eye is brought to the trophies room. The Right Eye can be looted from Mercer and sold, as Delvin will only accept the Left Eye if offered. Hope this helps. —Sky Above,Voice Within · Show thy Voice! 04:34, January 5, 2014 (UTC)

Bend Will not working

sorry to return to you this is what you posted, When I used it on him, he was in rhe air. He landed and basically told me that he was ready to do what I asked. What platform are you on? If you are on a PC, do you have any mods installed? If you do, try removing them and then see what happens. Cubears (talk) 23:14, January 7, 2014 (UTC) I like to say that I don't use mods and since you posted this I spent another 2 hours on trying to get him to chat so I can get aboard.Let me tell you I am using just a 50% face mask for ice and heal spell all I do is run around using bend will shout and every time he comes to the ground soon as I approach him he shoots ice or bites me so I am really stuck now and just don't know what to do I used saves from time I got the new shout at the wall and wait for him to fly and hover in front of me before I use the shout. So please sorry I did not want to keep posting on that page as its getting full of my postings so please any advice would be truly helpful as I know your a busy person at this time I am playing another char and I need to complete as previous people say I need to complete as another quest I got a map to the salthrim ore is also bugged when I try to hand the map to this guy and all he says "terrible times" I am on a PC92.15.131.97 17:37, January 8, 2014 (UTC)

So I can't respond to you since you don't have a talk page - hopefully you will see this. The only thing I can think of is that I never waited until he was in front of me ready to strike. I just aimed at him while he was flying around (leading him a bit so that he would fly into the shout as it got up there). Once it hit him, he immediately began searching for a place to land, and once he did, I climbed on. Maybe the problem you are having is that you are only using it when he is already in the process of attacking you. Cubears (talk) 05:50, January 9, 2014 (UTC)

Priests of Aedra

It's true that the category does not specify what sort of pantheon the priest is in, but, seeing as we already have a Daedra Worshipper category, it can be assumed that the other one is for Aedra. And, no, the worshipping is in the title, it applies for every daedra worshipper. If you think about it, anyone can be a priest of a daedric prince. It wouldn't be productive to group both Daedra and Aedra priests under one category. —Sky Above,Voice Within · Show thy Voice! 23:22, January 14, 2014 (UTC)

Re: Hags End

It doesn't happen on PC with latest patch (1.9), the marker always leads me to Deepwood Redoubt, despite the marker on the world map pointing at Hag's End entrance door. The chances are, the entrance door to Hag's End was originally in the Tamriel worldspace, but was later moved to its own worldspace (Deepwood Vale) and the marker on the map was most likely not updated to cover that change. I believe it's already added on the page though. --Speysider Talk Page | Tabber Code | Channel 14:25, February 1, 2014 (UTC)

Hey Cubears, that is quite odd, since I always assumed that those should be removed from the intro, to make the pages look more professional. I might ask an Administrator about this, since now I'm kind of confused. But, you can undo them until I get an answer. :) I am Sylar (talk) 19:31, February 22, 2014 (UTC)

Multiple categories

Cubears, sometimes Categories cover similar things, but that doesn't mean that only one ie necessery. For example, on  Online character page two relevant categories could be Online: Characters, and Online: High Rock Characters, both are similar, but still needed. So please don't remove the ones I added for the Stormcloak and Imperial pages. Thanks. Zippertrain85 (talk) 05:18, March 10, 2014 (UTC)

No, Cubears is correct. This is how the categories are set up. No need for redundancy. Cubears, please inform an admin if you see anything like this in the future. Jimeee (talk) 10:46, March 10, 2014 (UTC)
