Viinturuth (Dragon Language: VIiNTUrUTH Viin–Tu–Ruth, "Shine-Hammer-Rage")[1] is a named leveled dragon found in the wilds of Skyrim. He speaks in native dragon tongue when in the presence of other dragons. He is aggressive, and attacks using fire or ice, depending on the Dragonborn's level. He is often found in the company of Alduin, who will not join in any fight against the Dragonborn.

Location[]

Viinturuth can be found being resurrected by Alduin west of Anga's Mill. An Apprentice-level locked chest with leveled loot is nearby. The resurrection normally happens during the quest "Elder Knowledge" after finding out the location of the Elder Scroll.

If the Dragonborn has defeated Alduin, one of two things will happen; Viinturuth will either already be revived and roaming the mountains, or he will remain in the burial mound. If the latter occurs, it does not affect what happens.

  •  PC   360   PS3   After defeating Viinturuth it is possible that he will attack again and may be invisible.
  •  360   PS3   When he is encountered, Alduin may not finish resurrecting him. He will crawl out of the grave, but remain a skeleton and will not regain his flesh. He will not attack, but he can still be killed and looted, and his soul can be absorbed.
  •  PC   360   Viinturuth may spawn alive in Windhelm if he has not yet defeated, and can be fought as if he were in the wild.
  • Viinturuth may become stuck in the burial mound. Leaving the area and waiting may fix this.
  • Viinturuth may crawl out of the mound, fully formed, before Alduin has finished the resurrection.
  • If the Dragonborn defeats Alduin before visiting the mound, all of the mounds will be set, as if Alduin had already resurrected them. When found, the dragons will be circling above and will attack on sight as normal. However, upon encountering Viinturuth, it may appear as if he was never resurrected; his bones are still underground, and there will be three back bones protruding from the mound. When approached, he will be unhostile and say "Speak, if you have ought to say worth the listening." He can be attacked using Dragon Shouts. He will heal after being injured, making it difficult to bring his health down and defeating him. Using the Marked for Death shout can be used to make the process in defeating him easier. When defeated, he will pop out of the ground as a fully scaled dragon and will return under the ground, making it impossible to loot him. His soul will still be absorbed.
  • Viinturuth may not land after being depleted to less than half health and may continue flying, even after the health bar has been completely depleted.
  • After having defeated Viinturuth, it is possible that his corpse will spawn in Windhelm. The sound of fighting will be heard in the city when inside, but upon finding his body, the sound effects will cease and no one will be around or react to the dragon corpse. He may be looted a second time as well, but a second soul cannot be absorbed from him, leaving his body still intact.
  • It is possible that Miraak will spawn under Vinnturuth's corpse, which may prevent his soul from being absorbed
