For other uses, see Werebear.

Werebears are creatures in The Elder Scrolls V: Dragonborn. They are a variant of Lycanthrope, much like Werewolves except with a different appearance in whole.

Background

According to On Lycanthropy, Skyrim is said to be teeming with Werebears and they are the reason some people use Canis Root. Werebears are only found on the island of Solstheim and in random locations throughout it, whether or not there is a reason for them being located solely on the island is currently unknown though in the past, the Daedric Lord Hircine used the island to begin a hunt using lycanthropes.

Interactions

A pack of three werebears can be found at Snowclad Ruins where they can be seen in human form wearing ragged trousers, before transforming and attacking.

In addition, packs of three can be randomly encountered in the wilds of Solstheim. Transformed werebears may return to their human form after some time.

Combat

They seem to perform in the same manner as werewolves as their attacks are identical. They attack with their claws and teeth, but also possess a lunge attack which knocks the target off their feet.

Quests

Filial Bonds

Search for Wulf Wild-Blood's brother, Torkild, who has become a werebear.

Cleansing the Stones

The Conjure Werebear power can be gained during the Cleansing the Stones quest, after cleansing the Beast Stone.

Trivia

  • M'aiq the Liar may comment on these creatures: "Werebears? Where? Bears? Men that are bears?"
  • Amusingly, werebears can on occasion carry honey. This of course alludes to the notion portrayed in popular culture that bears enjoy honey.
  • They are functionally identical to werewolves, sharing the same animations and audio.
  • The werebear first appeared at the Bethesda Game Jam, along with the Vampire Lord.
